Blog-post by,

A recent Gartner report presented the results of an effort to measure the perceived level of satisfaction customers had with the “innovation” being provided by their IT outsourcing vendors.

Implementing new technologies for the right reasons

Blog-post by,

Do you sometimes find your IT teams looking for opportunities to implement new technology?
It often seems that we decide on a technology solution then start looking for an opportunity to use it, or we implement technology projects because they seem like a good idea. Possibly you feel that IT is leading the customer and worry that if IT did not propose new solutions the business would still be using pen and paper?

The cloud may be powerful and promising, but I think it grates on CIOs.

Why? Because it just seems like so much outsourcing that they've been through before and the cloud hype is suffocating. Ahh, such is the price for a technology that will probably for the basis on most IT departments in the future.

How to manage cloud services sprawl via service integration

Blog-post by,

Does this sound like you?  You are struggling to keep track of all your services, finding out who is using what service from what vendor, when each service is being used and the purpose of all. Add cloud to the mix, and you have mind-boggling complexity and a major challenge trying to manage multi-source environments.

While systems integration was once the big concern, today’s CIOs need to look to services integration.

In my last blog post I spoke about IT debt and how it can hinder CIOs from moving forward in their IT transformations. A few weeks ago now I was speaking with several executives from some leading financial, healthcare and manufacturing firms at a customer roundtable and the subject of IT debt came to the forefront.

Tech companies whine that they can't get skilled software engineers unless the limit is raised on H1-B visas. It's pure nonsense, says Enterprise CIO Forum community manager John Dodge. Follow me on Twitter.

What are the characteristics of a good CIO?

Blog-post by,

What makes the best CIOs so successful?

Is it technical expertise, or business acumen?

Is it the ability to run the day to day operations, or to deliver new projects?

Is it driving efficiencies from the current set-up, or building a vision for the future?

Where do people and relationships fit into this picture? Building and developing a strong team for example.

I have debated for some time about whether or not to write this post and, obviously, decided to do so.  Its origins come from observations I have made over the past several months as I have transitioned from CIO to consultant.   I sincerely hope that my less than scientific observations are exceptions, but I fear that they are not.

IT debt can be defined in many ways from the level of code complexity and the cost impact this has on making a change. Another common definition is the backlog of applications that are not supported at current release states.
