Responsibilities: Shurts recently joined Sysco Corporation as executive vice president and chief technology officer. Previously, at SuperValu, he managed the IT infrastructure in a turnaround scenario, ensuring a seamless intermeshing of IT operations with business strategies and goals.
Prior Experience: Worked at SuperValu from 2010-2012 after running IT at Cadbury PLC. Shurts was president of his own IT consultancy for four years, prior to which he spent 15 years at Nabisco, eventually being elevated to vice president of Nabisco’s eBusiness.
Recent Challenge: Throughout SuperValu there is a drive to essentially remake the core elements of what is a venerable business that hasn’t seen a lot of change since the days of the weekly advertising circulars. Now Shurts is heading aggressive efforts to harness various social media technologies to connect on a deeply personal level with customers; to unite store owners and managers on professional levels to both foster and share best business practices; and to create new and more efficient relationships with the company’s many suppliers. These as well as other initiatives are being undertaken in the midst of a multi-year cost savings initiative.
