Interesting question, However, the social platform mantionned in the poll are more oriented for an external usage. For internal usage, we are more looking at collaborative platforms like sharepoint, mindmaster, bluekiwi, yammer or IM like sametime, communicator. The usage will be done in order to increase productivity and accelerate information communication. My company, have decided to deploy a Bluekiwi platform for our Entreprise network, whith some pro's and con's. This help us to exchange on content topic and have an answer in less than one day. We also have facebook pages and twitter stars, however this remain  for our externamorel clients than for our company.

Good point, but I consider products like Sharepoint more an enterprise collaboration tool than social media. I guess IM qualifies as social media. Nonethless, the tools you are important in the enterprise.

Maybe social media isn't the right term for the enterprise because collaboration is focused on the work, not socializing.

It's a great question because the landscape and business needs will always continue to evolve. Having worked the buy-side and sell-side as CIO for a small global investment bank and prior to that with a global vendor, I was also left with the feeling that there was a huge hole as John Gallant commented.

So much so that I have put my money where my mouth is and I am building a solution to plug exactly this gap.  The primary purpose is to address the needs of business and groups but also individuals.  Collaboration is at the heart of what we do as individuals and businesses and the current offerings focus on the transient needs of the former, which is exactly why we started at the other end of the
equation.  Over a long period of time I could not find a consolidated solution that met all or most my teams’ needs across the globe.

Have I solved the conundrum? Time will tell.  I hope so. We’re launching the full service soon but feedback from this esteemed forum would be greatly appreciated at

I think this is a very tricky question to answer. Each of the mainstream platforms listed is really outward-facing and not designed to help employees collaborate. They may evolve, but it strikes me that there is a huge opportunity for someone to dominate intra-company collaboration and expertise sharing - to create a platform that is easy and natural to use and helps organize all kinds of information and media. I think something like that has a much more profound impact on the enterprise in the long run that these general purpose social platforms.

Hi John, so I guess you voted for "homegrown product?" My sense is social media breaks down the barriers between outward and inward facing. At the CIO Sloan Symposium last week, there was a lot of chatter given to barriers around the corporation coming down. Transparency was also a topic as was how Gen Y views corporations and privacy much differently than boomers like us. Massive change is underway...then again, I was in the academic cauldron, but it wasn't just the profs who were talking change. It was the CIOs, too.
