Mr. Suer is a senior manager for field and partner evangelism for HP’s IT Performance Management Suite. Prior to this role, Mr. Suer headed IT Performance Management Analytics Product Management including IT Financial Management and Executive Scorecard. This included managing the product management team for these products. Myles has 20 years experience leading new product initiatives at start-ups and large companies. During his career, he personally led 2 start-ups and 2 internal start-ups at existing public companies. Mr. Suer has, also, been a software industry analyst covering Business Intelligence, Business Activity Monitoring, & Business Service Management. At Hewlett Packard, Mr. Suer developed the above product concepts, business plans, product strategies, and product requirements. Mr. Suer holds a Master of Science degree from UC Irvine and a 2nd Masters in Business Administration in Strategic Planning from the University of Southern California. In addition, Mr. Suer is a member of IEEE and has spoken at multiple IEEE conferences and events.

However, as Gen Yers enter the workforce in increasing numbers and as us Gen Xers and Baby Boomers have finally gotten hip, the place to engage has moved from the PC to a mobile app. The app-centric world of mobility is changing technology. It’s changed our experience on the consumer side: My wife is playing with one of her smart phone apps before bed each night. And it’s having a profound effect in the enterprise as well.

One of the things that I like to do in the marketing classes I teach is to share from Geoffrey Moore’s book, “Crossing the Chasm.” In the book, Geoffrey discusses how building a business is like bowling. You have to start with the market segment that has the highest value proposition and is feeling the strongest pain point. For PCs, that market segment was financial managers and the product was Visicalc (an early predecessor of Microsoft Excel, for those of you who are too young to remember).

In Theodore Levitt's book, Thinking about Management, he says it is the job of management to ask questions. I love that you have taken it down to four questions here. At the same time I feel for the Phd's starting a business. Sometimes it is hard to enuciate the value you are creating--especially if you are too close to it. However, Theodore Levitt, also, gets this right. He says the job a business or a business supporting a business is to create and keep a customer. If you don't know the words, the customer will give you the them. Let's face it, the business has to provide the answer to all the CIOs questions.

HP Discover’s CIO Summits allow CIOs to dig deeper into subjects of particular interest. In the cloud breakout in Las Vegas last week, CIOs presented their viewpoints and learned more about the state of cloud strategy at HP IT. Obviously, cloud is a big deal for CIOs—HP IT said that what took them three months to provision now takes just 11 hours!

When I was in graduate school pursuing a business strategy degree, I took a class taught by Ian Mitroff, professor emeritus at the Marshall School of Business. During one class, Ian had the entire class take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment and then grouped us by our results. He asked our groups to determine the world’s problems and to create a Tinker Toy object to represent it. I was in the systems thinker group. We were done in 30 minutes and built a very simple object.
