Today's applications weren't designed to be deployed on a myriad of devices. They're legacy. Many need to be replaced. Whether tablets replace PCs or not, the takeaway is that multiple device use requires applicatoins to be rewritten, modernized, etc. Application modernization is the type of activity that is often put off. Perhaps the tablet trend (as well as BYOD) well help deal with this issue.

I don't think anyone is saying PCs are going away. What I hear most is, "the end of the PC era." I interpret this to mean that the role of the PC as the "primary user device" is giving way to the tablet. Yes, we will all have our laptops at the ready for various needs, but the device we will carry everywhere and use the most will be a tablet - and likely an iPad.
