Myths and realities of cloud security

Leadership Video by,

Cloud computing is not 'your father's Oldsmobile', certainly as it relates to data security. That doesn't mean it isn't secure, rather that organizations must prepare in special ways to ensure cloud data security. Enterprise CIO Forum editorial director interviews CTOvision.com editor-in-chief Bob Gourley and Tom Reilly, vice president and general manager of HP enterprise security.

Lack of perceived control and generalized angst may be the last hurdle before we see the ubiquity of Cloud in the enterprise. Today at HP Discover, HP Labs spoke to some developments to add to Cloud confidence, along with ongoing updates to security policies, procedures, and tools from HP SaaS. Whenever the topic of cloud computing comes up, cloud security isn’t far behind. Survey after survey has shown it to be a top CIO concern, but how much of that concern is legitimate? Really, while concerns over cybersecurity are well founded especially if an organization makes a hasty transition to cloud computing, it’s a myth that the cloud must be less secure than conventional computing. If you architect and design for the cloud, your enterprise can be more secure than ever, even when your data is going out to mobile devices.

Cloud is certainly a shift and an increasing risk to a changing threat. As HP 's Tom Reilly points out, enterprise security should be transparent, have less vulnerabilities, have greater research on the types of attacks that will occur.

Designing security into cloud platforms is essential...and apparently CIOs believe that's what's happening because they say security is not their top concern when it comes to cloud adoption...
