“Far too many CIOs I speak with talk more like victims than business leaders,” says Joel H. Dobbs in the linked-to brief. Very telling are two research stats:

1 in 3 are "challenged communicating with execs and clients. (page 2)

69% rank "value in building relationships with customers/clients" as "not at all valuable"

The solution crirtical to rebuilding a customer orientations may be embedding IT at the point of contact driving value.

Great insight, if leadership is all about influence, then communication is  about how to convey such an influence, CIO need master different styles of conversation: http://futureofcio.blogspot.com/2012/02/five-styles-of-conversations-modern-cio.html, in order to have the heart to heart chat with different audiance, CIO may also need be the listener, to delight both internal and end customers. thanks.
